SXSW Quick Notes: Day 4

  • Started the day with "Five Factors Influencing the Future of UX Design" --"ubiquity" is the one that caught my attention. This talk was primarily about UX in retail. Surprised I didn't hear much about CUIs.

  • Next up was "Facebook Messenger & The Rise of Bots". I was able to catch the tail end of this conversation, since the room was too small for the amount of interest in the topic. I still managed to ask a question & meet the speakers afterwards.

  • Heard Whitney Wolfe, CEO of Bumble, talk about empowering women to "make the first move" on the dating app, overall entrepreneurship advice, and how eventually Bumble could evolve into a "connections" app well beyond dating.

  • Next up was "VOICE: The Invisible UI Nobody Speaks About". Very interesting panel on not just voice user interfaces and CUIs, but on overall voice and tone of the products and services we design.

  • Went back to the Trade Show and finally had the Facebook VR/360 experience. Very cool, indeed.
  • Finished the day of talks with a great one called "Applying Science To Conversational UX Design". It showed how social sciences and most importantly, conversation analysis, can help designers make compelling user experiences with chatbots and voice user interfaces. It also offered a number of principles to apply that were rooted on social design, with a UX Design counterpart to match. This one was one of my favourites of the entire conference because of its delivery and applicability. Check out ibm.biz/conversational-UX for more information. Sadly, a fire alarm went off at the JW Marriott and had to end the talk early. Gladly, no designer perished during the evacuation.

  • Finished off the day by seeing the first group of great bands as the Music portion of SXSW begins. Had the pleasure of seeing band like GGOOLLDD, NONAME, Har Mar Superstar, and one of my favourites: SOHN.
